Godspell opens March 23 at Mary Walker

The Nantucket High School Music Department Spring production of Godspell, the 70’s rock musical based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, opens Friday March 23 at the Mary Walker Auditorium at 7:30 PM. In a joint effort with Theatre Workshop, the show is a musical celebration of the energetic series of skits about the life of Christ.

GODSPELL is one of the most successful musicals in history. It presents a whimsical view of Jesus – in the original version he is dressed like a clown with a red nose, a red heart painted on his forehead, and a Superman shirt. His followers and disciples re-enact parables and scenes from Jesus' life.

The rock musical was an immediate hit when it opened in the spring of 1971, several songs from the show, including Day by Day, became chart hits. The show – conceived and written by then - college student John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz of Pippin, and more recently Pocahontas, and Prince of Egypt, fame -- went on to win rave reviews and a Grammy Award for Best Score. It is bursting with toe tapping, hand clapping infectious music

TWN had originally intended to produce the show back in November, but felt it needed a broader base to proceed from and needed to focus on their nationwide search for a Producing Director. When the head of NHS’ Music department, Barbara Elder, approached TWN board member Gordon McGregor about directing the High School musical while she was on sabbatical, the fit with Godspell seemed a natural. “This is a perfect opportunity to combine the incredible talents of the Nantucket youth with the knowledge and experience of the TWN team. I’m very excited about the whole idea,” commented director Gordon McGregor, who also directed last year’s High School musical, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

Robert Behrman, Musical Director and Organist for the Congregational Church, is musical director and brings a great deal of enthusiasm, energy and talent to the project. A chorus of over 25 will complement the cast of 10 students and community members. Presented in the tradition of the Encore Series of New York’s City Center, this version focuses on the musical score and original orchestration, maximizing participation opportunities for all.

Performance dates are March 23 & 24 at 7:30PM and March 25 at 2PM and will take place in the Mary Walker Auditorium at the High School. Tickets are $12, $10 for students and seniors and are available at the door, at the High School Office and at Nantucket Gourmet on India Street.
